Afro Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) Clinics
“Established in 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis (step-dad), the parents of former Leukaemia sufferer Daniel De-Gale. Our aim is to raise awareness and increase Black, Mixed Race and Ethnic Minority representation on the UK Bone Marrow register.
Finding a match is greater if the donor is from the same racial background. A blood test will put you on the register and if you ever match with a patient further blood tests will follow. Bone Marrow is a blood like liquid, which can be donated by one person and transplanted into another person in 1 of 2 simple procedures. A person’s Bone Marrow type is an inherited characteristic and the chance of finding a matching donor for a patient is GREATER if the donor is from the same Racial/Ethnic background. After 24 years only 550 Black people had ever joined the register. During the last 10 years the ACLT has helped raise it to approx. 25,000. But overall a figure of around 50,000 – 60,000 would be more fitting. We also offer support to people suffering with Leukaemia and all other Blood related cancers. The ACLT is intent on encouraging all 18 – 50 year olds to find 30 minutes from their busy schedules to register as potential bone marrow donors. Our aim is to inform people that the seemingly small act of becoming a bone marrow donor could have a dramatic impact on the lives of sufferers of Leukaemia and other blood related illnesses by offering the ‘gift of life’. This involves organising and conducting numerous recruitment registration drives throughout the UK” . List of forthcoming clinics
